The project aims to translate fundamental principles of utilitarianism from utilitarianism.net into Thai, making these philosophical concepts accessible to Thai students and the wider public. Additionally, it seeks to translate and publish "The Life You Can Save" by Professor Peter Singer, introducing effective altruism which aligning with Buddhist principles for practical application. The initiative involves creating a dedicated website to host translated materials and curated resources on utilitarianism and effective altruism.
Translation of Utilitarianism Principles: Our primary goal is to accurately translate the core tenets of utilitarianism from utilitarianism.net into Thai. We will achieve this by collaborating with professional translators who are proficient in both English and Thai, ensuring clarity and fidelity to the original content. Thorough editing and review processes will be implemented to maintain quality and coherence.
Translation of "The Life You Can Save": Another key objective is to translate Professor Peter Singer's "The Life You Can Save" into Thai. We will also distribute 300 copies to public libraries and educational institutes.
Website Development: We will develop a user-friendly website to host the translated materials and supplementary resources. The website will serve as a centralized platform for accessing information on utilitarianism, effective altruism, and related topics. Features such as interactive forums, educational tools, and downloadable resources will enhance user engagement and learning.
Dissemination and Outreach: To ensure widespread dissemination, we will distribute printed copies of translated materials to public libraries and educational institutions across Thailand. Additionally, we will conduct outreach activities such as workshops, seminars, and reading discussions in high schools and universities to promote awareness and understanding of utilitarianism and effective altruism.
The funding will be primarily used for the translation efforts, website development, printing cost and dissemination of translated materials. This includes hiring professional translators, web developers, and covering operational costs associated with website maintenance and promotion. Additionally, a portion of the funds will be allocated towards the distribution "The Life You Can Save" in Thai to public libraries and educational institutions.
Our team, Sam Yan Press, specializes in translating and publishing books related to effective altruism. We have successfully translated "The Most Good You Can Do" and are currently completing the translation of "Animal Liberation Now." With our expertise in this field, we are well-equipped to undertake the translation of utilitarianism.net and "The Life You Can Save" into Thai.
If this project fails, it could be due to several factors such as inadequate funding leading to subpar translation quality, technical difficulties in website development, or lack of interest and engagement from the target audience. The outcome of failure would mean missed opportunities for Thai students to engage with these important philosophical ideas and a setback in promoting effective altruism in the region.
Finding support from Thai foundations for projects focused on foundational knowledge, particularly in philosophy, can be challenging despite its significant importance and demand among the populace. As such, while we are actively seeking partnerships and grants, we recognize the difficulty in securing additional funding solely from local foundations for this initiative.
